Development of Water Sector Strategic Development Plan (WSSDP). We have been engaged by the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing to facilitate the process for the preparation of the first ever strategic sector development plan for the water sector. The assignment entailed stakeholder consultations at the national, regional and district levels. We developed a draft plan and facilitated two rounds of stakeholder consultative workshops to validate the draft plan.

Development of Peri Urban Water Strategy through the implementation of a Pilot Project at Berekum. In association with IGIP Consulting Engineers of Germany and BURGEAP of France, we are implementing a pilot project to develop and test innovative models for water service delivery in peri urban areas.

2010

Development of National Rural Sanitation Model and Scaling Up Strategy. The model dwelt extensively on the concept of Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) and Sanitation Marketing. We conducted key informant interviews with national, regional and district level stakeholders in the water, sanitation and hygiene sectors in Ghana and facilitated a series of discussion fora to seek stakeholder input into the design of the model. The assignment was undertaken in association with AGUACONSULT of UK.

2009/2010

Sustainable Services at Scale (or Triple-S): Study on National Level Policy and Process and Sector Harmonisation. We conducted key informant interviews with national, regional and district level stakeholders in the water, sanitation and hygiene sectors in Ghana and prepared a report on the outcome of the study. We also participated in a series of national and international workshops and symposium including one held in Uganda on the Triple-S programme and made presentations on the study outcomes at these fora.

2009/2010

Study on Strengthening the Inclusion of the Poor in World Bank financed Urban Water and Sanitation Projects. This research project was commissioned by WaterAid UK and was carried out in three countries i.e. Ghana, Burkina and Tanzania to assess the inclusion of the poor in World Bank financed urban water and sanitation projects. In Ghana, the Urban Water Project was used as a case study. We conducted key informant interviews and focused group discussions with officials in the urban water sector at the national, regional and district levels and prepared a report on the outcome of the study.

2002-2007

Rural Water Supply Programme III in selected districts in the Eastern and Ashanti Regions:In association with IGIP of Germany, we facilitated the provision and management of the 450 boreholes and 500 VIP Latrines in 9 districts in the Ashanti and Eastern Regions; we established  a system of community ownership and management of the facilities; promoted improved hygiene practices and safe sanitation in the beneficiary communities; we facilitated District Assemblies’ involvement in project implementation; we provided training for members of the District Water and Sanitation Teams; assisted CWSA to identify, select and contract Partner Organisations; undertook training of Partner Organisations to build their capacity to provide anticipated extension services.

Rural Water Supply Programme IV of the Ashanti Region:In association with IGIP of Germany, we are facilitating the provision of 1,000 boreholes, 200 institutional KVIP latrines and 3000 household VIP latrines and supporting District Assemblies to establish processes and procedures for District level implementation. We are also establishing and reinforcing community management of facilities to be provided facilitating the promotion, construction and use of demonstration household latrines and supervising the construction of institutional KVIP latrines.

Small Towns Sanitation and Hygiene Delivery in the Asikuma Odoben Brakwa and Awutu Efutu Senya Districts of the Central Region:We are providing technical assistance to the 2 (two) District Assemblies and selected schools in their respective areas of jurisdiction in the promotion, marketing, management and supervision of hygiene and sanitation delivery. We are also involved in mobilizing communities to pay  5% contribution to capital cost of water facilities to be provided; promotion and marketing of institutional latrines assisting the District Assemblies in contracting and construction supervision; training of artisans on the construction of KVIP latrines, training of school health  teachers on the use of facilities.

Provision of Extension Services in over 120 communities under the Three Districts Water Supply Project in the North Tongu, Dangme East and Dangme West Districts:We were engaged to conduct extension services involving community animation, training and capacity for selected district and community level stakeholders on the project. We facilitated the establishment of a Water and Sanitation Development Board to oversee the management of the scheme and mobilised beneficiary communities to make contributions towards the capital cost of the project. We also trained the WSDB and support it to prepare and sign a Facility Management Plan

Water and Sanitation Component for Small Towns in Greater Accra Region:In association with COWI Consult of Denmark, we facilitated the provision of small towns piped systems and established WATSAN Committees and Water and Sanitation Development Boards in the Dangme East, Dangme West and Ga Districts and Tema Municipal Area of the Greater Accra Region. Subsequently, we organised a series of training programmes to build the capacity of members of the WATSAN Committees and WSDB to operate and manage the water supply system. We also facilitated the preparation and signing of a Facility Management Plan by the WSDB.

Development and Production of Community Operational Manual for Community Water and Sanitation Project II (CWSP II):We designed and produced a user friendly Community Operational Manual for actors at the community level Water and sanitation (WATSAN) Committee and Water and Sanitation Development Boards (WSDBs) under the Community Water and Sanitation Project Phase II.  Subsequently, we organised training workshops in Brong Ahafo, Ashanti, Upper East and Upper West regions for selected stakeholders from the district, sub district and community levels. We produced draft copies of the manuals and organised training workshops to train stakeholders on the use of the manual. We subsequently organised a series of workshops in all the regions to get feedback from stakeholders on the manual and to make revisions

Water and Sanitation Development Boards (WSDB) Learning Workshop:We were tasked to review the performance of WSDB’s in the Dangme East, Dangme West and Ga Districts and Tema Municipal Area of the Greater Accra Region and to design and implement a training programme to build their capacity to enable them adequately manage existing water and sanitation facilities. We provided training on areas such as book-keeping and record keeping, procurement of goods, services and works, board meetings and follow-up on decision, setting of tariffs and financial management, customer care and relation, and accountability.

Training of Three (3) Water and Sanitation Development Boards in the South Tongu District: - Dzogborve, Avorvi And Agorkpo:We conducted a Training Needs Assessment (TNA) for the members of the WSDB and WATSAN committees and facilitated a series of training programmes including follow-up visits to build the capacity of members to manage water and sanitation facilities.

Small Town Water Supply Schemes Project (Phases I & II):  in association with IGIP Consulting Engineers of Germany, we provided technical assistance services of comparable international standards to District Assemblies and Water and Sanitation Development Boards (WSDBs) in 17 communities in eight (8) districts involving the supervision of construction, contract management for small town piped schemes and training of WSDBs and WATSAN committees.

Follow-up support in Operation and Maintenance to WATSAN Committees and WSDBs of Abokobi-Oyarifa-Teiman Area and Oyibi Area Water schemes:We reviewed the membership of WATSAN Committees and WSDBs; establish financial management procedures in the operation of the WATSAN Committees/WSDB for the water schemes; provide hands on coaching to members of the WATSAN Committees/WSDB’s in budgeting, tariffs setting, financial management and meter reading; facilitate the selection of caretakers, vendors, Technical Coordinator (Water Supply Manager) and provide training in operation of the water scheme.

Accra Metropolitan Environmental Health Initiative:We facilitated the design and dissemination of messages aimed at improving environmental health and sanitation in 5 sub-metro areas in Accra through health promotion; reviewed feedback from target groups and development of messages and materials and assessed training needs of staff of the AMA to determine capacity to handle environmental health promotion activities.

Finalisation of Extension Services Manual for Completion of Manual for District Level Extension Workers in the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions:We developed a manual for district level extension workers in the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions on the provision and management of water, sanitation and hygiene delivery in rural communities and small towns.
